Pitcher Throws Fastest Pitch Ever Recorded In Major League Game (Video)

Aroldis Chapman of the Cincinnati Reds threw the fastest pitch ever recorded in a major league game last night, a 105 mile-per-hour fastball that had opposing fans for the San Diego Padres ooing and ahhing.

Chapman is the Cuban phenom that has finally given people in Cincinnati something to be excited about. His pitches routinely crack 100 mph, and his appearances from the bullpen are often the lone bright spot in a Cincinnati sports landscape that has been dominated by mediocrity for a number of years.

As Steve Henson from Yahoo Sports points out, the pitch (and the pitcher) put an extremely exciting pennant race in the background for a moment. Out of the 25 pitches Chapman threw in 1 1/2 innings of work, none of them were below 100 mph.

“I didn’t see it until the ball was behind me,” said Tony Gwynn, son of the hall-of-famer with the same name and the guy who found himself in the batter’s box when Chapman decided to break the radar gun. “I was trying not to look at the radar reading because I’d be intimidated. I saw how hard he was throwing and just tried to be slow and work my hands.”

There is audible noise from the crowd when that radar reading appears on the stadium scoreboard. Watch the video below: it’s likely the most exciting ball 2 you’ll ever see.
