Brian Cashman Allegedly Shook Down For Money, This Time Scott Boras Wasn’t Involved

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is in the news on Thursday for what he and his lawyers are claiming to be an extortion case, in which he allegedly paid a woman $6,000 after the couple had an “inappropriate relationship.”

To think, after giving a total of $100 million to A.J. Burnett and Carl Pavano, it’s a $6,000 payoff that has him in trouble. Sports, huh?

According to reports, the woman, 36-year-old Louise Neathway, has been trying to “shake down” Cashman for cash over the past year and on Thursday she was arraigned on grand larceny, stalking and harassment charges. This all stemmed from an incident where Neathway is said to have threatened to go to the press about their affair if Cashman didn’t help her pay for a $15,000 medical procedure. This eventually led to Cashman paying her $6,000 to go away.

Neathway has a long history of being a certified stalker, which probably won’t help much when she steps in front of a judge on Tuesday. She, however, told Deadspin that while money did exchange hands, it wasn’t because she was trying to extort him in any way, but the money, according to her, was a gift to help her pay her rent. Right now it’s more of a “he said, she said” case that I imagine won’t be going away anytime soon. It might take a few court dates to get this all sorted out, but as of now we don’t have enough information either way to say whether or not this is a case of extortion or a love affair gone wrong.
