Bye Bye Sweet Lou: Piniella’s Best Tirades
On the day after Lou Piniella announced his retirement effective at the end of the season, there are many accolades we can recognize him for.
He’s accumulated over 1800 wins in 23 years in the dugout with five teams, making him the 14th winningest manager in Major League Baseball history. He’s one of only five men to win Manager of the Year Awards on three occasions, the last with the Cubs in 2008. The 66-year-old won the World Series with the Cincinnati Reds in 1990.
We could highlight any of those things to define Sweet Lou’s career. But his tirades are just so much funnier. For all his managerial prowess, it’s Piniella’s propensity to blow his top at umpires, fans, and Steve Stone that we’ll remember most fondly.
Here are some of the greatest hits.
