Announcers, Players, And Fans All Amused By Carlos Zambrano’s Latest Violent Outburst
The Cubs lost to the Astros 7-3 last night, but it wasn’t Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano’s fault. Zambrano pitched eight terrific innings, surrendering just one run on seven hits, while also striking out seven and not walking a batter.
However, Zambrano also likes to hit (he’s batting .346 with a home run so far this season), and in that area, he didn’t help himself last night, going 0-2 and striking out in both at bats. One of the Ks particularly upset the volatile Zambrano…so he did this:
We love this for several reasons. First off, the “breaking a bat over the knees” bit always delivers, regardless of circumstance. Second, Zambrano is a pitcher. Pitchers are not supposed to be good enough hitters that they get this upset with themselves after making outs.
But most of all, we love the effort Zambrano put in to make the break happen. If you’ll notice, his first attempt actually doesn’t succeed. Rather than be embarrassed by the failure, however, he tries again – and sure enough, gets it to go. Persistence, people. Hey, Zambrano’s listed at 6-5 and 270 pounds: the bat was giving way sooner or later.
Also, you’ll notice he angrily hits the broken bat pieces against one another as he walks away. Even after getting the initial break attempt out of his system, then doing it again to finish the job, he still hadn’t worked off all his anger. And that’s why we love him.
