White Sox Fans: Do You Hate The Cardinals, Like Conan Says You Do?
UPDATE: Might as well put this here – one commenter made the should-have-been-obvious-to-me point that the White Sox just played a series against the Cardinals, which was probably the whole reason for this bit. Still, the “White Sox fans don’t actually hate the Cardinals in general” point stands.
The original post is below.
It’s a tough divide to bridge, the one between Cubs and White Sox fans. They’ve shared the same city for over a century. North Side vs. South Side. Before the White Sox won it all in 2005, it was endlessly tortured fanbase vs. endlessly tortured fanbase, too. And it’ll never end. White Sox and Cubs fans are so closely packed together that it can’t end. The White Sox vs. Cubs debate will go on forever.
Unless you can figure out a way to provide fans of each team with common ground, which is what actor Johnny Galecki, guesting on filming-in-Chicago-for-the-week Conan, did last night. How do you provide fans of different teams common ground? Find a different team they both hate and unite them in that hatred. That team last night? The St. Louis Cardinals, represented by one unfortunate “fan”:
The only issue is: do White Sox fans hate the Cardinals? Sure, Cubs fans hate the Cardinals. Huge, long-standing rivalry. Geographically similar. Cardinals way more historically successful, for added Cubs fan bitterness. But the White Sox? The Cardinals and White Sox aren’t even in the same league. Neither are the White Sox and Cubs, of course, but being in the same city transcends that. You can’t not hate the other team in your city, even if it’s for no other reason than being tired of hearing about them all the time.
Not hating a team that’s over 260 miles away is a little different. If anything, we’d almost expect White Sox fans to kind of like the Cardinals, since the enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that. But we’re not White Sox fans, so we’ll throw the question out there: Sox fans, do you actually hate the Cardinals? If so, why? Or was Conan just desperate for a team that made the bit work? Our hunch is the latter, but if we’re wrong, let us know.
