Cubs Fan Clears The Air, Says Girlfriend Was In Fact Not Going To The Bathroom During Failed Proposal

Remember that fan at the Cubs game who tried proposing to his girlfriend via scoreboard declaration, only for her not to be there when the question was popped for everyone at Wrigley to see? You should remember, it was only last night. Well we now know that fan to be Greg Altringer from Montana, who sent SportsGrid an email detailing what led to his botched proposal Monday evening and why his girlfriend Erica was actually away from her seat. Here’s what Greg had to say:

She was getting us drinks so I could let everyone around me know what was about to happen. Unfortunately the inning was very short. She was not in the bathroom as you had reported. But it all worked out!

So there you have it. The future Mrs. Altringer was fetching drinks during her proposal, not using the little girls’ room.

I think the bigger point to glean from this is really how much Greg and Erica are your quintessential Cubs fans. They simply know how to grin and bear it through the bumps in the road and are resilient enough to make the most of a crummy situation. Like Greg himself said, it all did work out for them in the end — even if it almost never does for their beloved Cubs.

And let’s face it, when the wee Altringers ask about the engagement, “Grandma was getting some drinks” sounds a bit nicer than “Grandma was taking a piss”, don’t you think?
