Watch A Boston Red Sox Sportswriter Jinx The Boston Red Sox

During a rain delay in last night’s Red Sox-Orioles game, Boston’s broadcast decided to kill some time by speaking with Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy. At the time that this interview takes place, the Red Sox have a slim 3-2 lead over the Orioles in the bottom of the 7th.

More importantly, though, the Rays are losing 7-0 to the Yankees in the eighth inning. Hardly anyone thought Tampa Bay could come back, and with a Rays loss the Red Sox were assured an AL Wild Card tie at the very least. So Shaughnessy made his prediction: the Rays would lose and the Red Sox would live to play another day. It was a perfectly reasonable thing to say.

Except it didn’t happen. The Rays came back, the Red Sox lost, and this was the column Shaughnessy wrote for this morning’s Globe. Again, Shaughnessy’s prediction was in no way crazy; it was a perfectly reasonable thing to say to a New England audience at the time. There was a very slim chance this collapse would actually come to fruition. But watching him assure Red Sox fans that their team won’t be collapsing, and now knowing that that’s exactly what happened, is a little creepy.
