The Red Sox’ Darnell McDonald Saved A Home Run, And Almost Fell Over The Wall
You saw the Angels’ Mike Trout make a spectacular, leaping, home-run-robbing catch earlier on this site, but despite the fact that i’s being hailed as possibly the catch of the year, it actually had some competition for MLB catch of the day.
That competition came out of Boston, in the person of Red Sox outfielder Darnell McDonald. McDonald’s catch might not have had a ton of impact on the outcome of the game (the home run he robbed would have been a solo shot, and the Sox were up 10-4 in the ninth inning at the time), and maybe it wasn’t the combined masterpiece of ground coverage, leaping, wall-crashing, and timing that Trout’s was, but it was still damned impressive:
The most striking thing, to us: McDonald wasn’t too far from actually falling right ov er the wall and in to the bullpen. Had he done that, the reaction to this catch would have been a different animal. It might even be getting more play than Trout’s catch. A guy going over the wall – even one that short – to bring back a homer? That catches eyeballs. Next time, Darnell. Next time.
