Diamondbacks Rookie Ryan Wheeler Hits First Career Home Run, Dugout Ignores Him

In his 20th career game, Arizona rookie third baseman Ryan Wheeler belted his first career home run in the 7th inning last night against the Houston Astros to push the Arizona lead to 11-4. After rounding the bases and returning to the dugout, Wheeler awaited a hearty congratulations. Too bad his teammates had other plans, as every player remained seated and emotionless for over a minute.

Wheeler took it all in good fun, doling out two high-fives to no one in particular as he entered the dugout, all the while keeping a smile on his face as he sat down on the bench. But even the announcers couldn’t take it, giving play-by-play of his inner monologue. “C’mon guys, somebody hug me.”

After an excruciating minute, his teammates acknowledged the feat and offered up the requisite congratulations. Really, though, this was an impressive effort by the entire bench to appear completely oblivious. I mean, even the dugout police officer just sat there.
