Do Not Let Your Pitcher Near Sharp Things, Or Something Like This Might Happen

Just as running with scissors is a no-no for any non-masochist, fixing his own glove laces with scissors should be a no-no for Chris Narveson.

The Brewers left-hander will miss Friday’s start against the Pirates after a handyman effort gone awry on Tuesday night left his left thumb in a splint and requiring eight stitches.

Here’s what happened in Narveson’s own words:

“I was just fixing my glove. I guess the screw on the end of the thing between the scissors was sticking through the bolt a little bit, I had my thumb up there and ran it across. Next thing, I look down and I’ve got a gash in my thumb.”

Apparently Milwaukee head trainer Roger Caplinger knew Narveson’s freak accident was trouble as soon as he saw the sliced thumb tip.

“He looked over and said, ‘That’s not good.’”

The pitcher doesn’t expect to be out of the game for too long, explaining that the injury didn’t hit the nerve and reasoning that “hockey players play the next day, so I figure I can tough it out.

“It’s just unfortunate it happened. You’re sitting there, trying to be careful, and something silly pops up.”

Something silly…and bloody…and no doubt very uncomortable.

Though, you have to hand it to Narveson for wanting to fix his glove by himself and not harass the team’s equipment personnel. That being said, he’s learned from the pain-inducing episode and will not be attempting any deft maneuvers with scissors anytime soon.

“I think maybe I’ll have him do it next time.”
