Donald Trump Threatens To Turn New York Mets Into Even More Of A Circus Than They Already Are

In a move that would almost certainly cause the back page of the New York Post to spontaneously combust, business magnate and noted firer Donald Trump is considering buying the New York Mets.

The Donald said he is thinking about buying the Mets after current owner, and friend of Trump, Fred Wilpon announced he might have to sell a portion of the team due to a $1 billion lawsuit stemming from the Bernie Madoff scandal.

While Trump said he doesn’t necessarily insist on having a majority stake in the team, he did say: “My history is: I control things.”

He clearly knows what he’s doing when it comes to business—the man is worth 2.6 billion dollars, according to Forbes. But wealth and business acumen don’t necessarily add up to championships, even in a sport with no salary cap. There are currently nine billionaire baseball owners, according to Forbes, the richest of whom is Theodore Lerner (a real estate mogul, like Trump) at $3.2 billion. Since he bought the Washington Nationals in 2006, the team hasn’t finished a season better than 16 games under .500.

In fact, the only billionaire owner to win a World Series is Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, unless, of course you consider the late George Steinbrenner who was worth $1.3 billion. If Trump runs the Mets like The Boss ran the Yankees—who consistently have the highest payroll in baseball—as opposed to how Lerner runs the Nationals (who had the eighth lowest payroll in the league), Mets fans can count on at least competing with their cross-town rivals for marquee players. The Mets had the fifth highest payroll in 2010, which was still more than $70 million below the Yankees.

But here’s the thing: the Mets are in a state of perpetual chaos. If Trump were taking over a smoothly-run team, his larger-than-life personality might not be a concern. But since the organization is already a circus, Trump’s presence would do nothing but exacerbate the problems they already have.
