Video: Angels’ Ervin Santana Pitches No-Hitter Against Indians

Today, the Angels beat the Indians 3-1 on a July afternoon. Nothing about that looks remotely exciting, and that’s why everything about it is entirely misleading. That’s because the Angels’ Ervin Santana, despite yielding that one run, pitched a no-hitter today…and pitched almost as well as one possibly can in the process. He didn’t let up a hit. He only walked one. He struck out 10. He needed just 105 pitches. He was dominant. Despite the lack of a shutout, a no-hitter’s a no-hitter.

In case you’re wondering, the Indians scored that one run in the first inning on a wild pitch by Santana – one of his few mistakes. The baserunner who scored, Ezequiel Carrera, reached base via an error, so Cleveland’s one run was unearned. Santana’s accomplishment, though, was anything but. He’s a tremendous talent (eight fine starts in a row isn’t an accident), and when tremendous talent meets lightning in a bottle, you’ve got…well, exactly what happened today. Watch Santana finish the game off below.
