Greg Maddux, Five Others Inducted To Baseball Hall Of Fame Today: Here's How To Watch

  • Rick Chandler

It’s a pretty great lineup at Cooperstown today, as six are inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Frank Thomas, Bobby Cox, Joe Torre and Tony La Russa will all be making speeches, and here’s how to watch.

Updates below.

But before we get to those, may I make a modest proposal? These speeches are too long. In the era of the internet and social media, can’t the thank yous be chronicled online, on ESPN or Sports Illustrated or whatever, and the inductees give shortened versions of their speeches at Cooperstown?

You can hold up your plaque, thank a few folks, and then the music begins to swell, like at the Academy Awards, and you’re led off stage. After all, these guys made it to the Hall because they could swing a bat or throw a ball better than most of the rest of us — not because of their public speaking talents. I would rather see Thomas swing at a few soft tosses than listen to him name-check 129 teammates.

But that’s just me.

Here are our six inductees:

Frank Thomas name-checked 139 teammates in his HOF speech.

* Oops — seems that Torre forgot to thank George Steinbrenner, mentioning the late Yankees’ owner only in passing during his 28-minute speech. New York Daily News:

Torre immediately made an opening statement in the post-speech media availability saying he screwed up.

“I missed thanking the most obvious guy in the world when you’re talking about the Yankees,” a visibly shaken Torre said. “I mentioned George, but my plan was to thank him and the fact that we had a great relationship.

“It was the proudest time in my whole career and I just feel terrible I omitted that.”
