Home Plate Umpire Jerry Layne Was Struck In The Head By A Broken Bat Last Night

In the 4th inning of last night’s Twins-Reds game, Reds’ catcher Devin Mesoraco’s weak ground ball had nearly devastating consequences. The barrel of his bat splintered off backwards, striking home plate umpire Jerry Layne in the side of the head and leaving him down for several minutes. Layne was eventually able to walk off the field on his own power.
Although Layne did briefly lose consciousness, all his tests came back normal. As a precaution, he will not be working the rest of the series.
