Watch Johan Santana Pitch The First No-Hitter In Mets History

“It has happened” – some of the first words uttered by SNY’s announcing team after Johan Santana finished off the Mets; first no-hitter in 51 years of existence tonight, in an 8-0 win against the Cardinals. Santana struck out David Freese to end it.There was some controversy – a missed call on a pitch on which Santana appeared to hit a batter, and a questionable fair/foul ball call on a potential Cardinal hit – and there was uncertainty, as to finish the no-no off, Santana needed to throw the most pitches (134) he ever has in a major league game.

But none of it matters. It has happened. Mets fans, who haven’t had much to get excited about lately, are ecstatic. And they deserve to be. As a baseball fan, except if you’re a fan of a select few teams, how couldn’t you be? This was a long time coming. And now… it has happened. Savor it. See the final out (and a presumably-euphoric field-rushing Mets fan) below, via CJ Fogler.

You know what, we like the low-quality Youtube video too, because the Mets fan goes nuts after the final out. Here’s that one:

Another interesting note, via CJ (a Twins fan with nothing but goodwill toward former Twin Santana tonight, for the record): remember when Philip Humber threw that perfect game earlier this year? He and Santana were once traded for each other. Well, there were other players in that trade too, but still, interesting. And Mets fans will never again have to hear about how Humber – and everyone else who threw a no-hitter after playing for the team – was once a Met.
