Justin Verlander Had The Calmest Reaction To A No-Hitter We’ve Ever Seen
Maybe it was that he’s done it before. Maybe it was that it’s only May. Maybe it’s that the outcome of the game itself (a 9-0 Tigers win) was anticlimactic. Or maybe Justin Verlander is just a naturally even-keeled guy.
Whatever it was, when Verlander finished off his second career no-hitter today, he looked…pleased. Sure, there was a perfunctory fist pump. Sure, his teammates mobbed him. But Verlander didn’t even smile until he embraced catcher Alex Avila (who looked way more excited than Verlander, for the record).
And whatever the reason for Verlander’s lack of outward ecstasy, he certainly had reason to be happy. His no-hitter, though it only featured four strikesouts, was far more impressive than the one the Twins’ Francisco Liriano pitched just days before. And by adding that second no-hitter to the career resume (a career with much left to go), Verlander’s in some select company. Such calm…yet so much to be excited about. Video of the final pitch – and reaction – below, via Mocksession.
