Leave It To Seattle To Try And Win Ichiro Back Through Indie Rock

Just when you thought the populace of the Pacific Northwest couldn’t get any softer, indie music legend and Seattle native Ben Gibbard went ahead and proved you wrong. The former Deathcab For Cutie/Postal Service frontman did what any soft rock musician does when he loses a long-time love and wrote a song about it. In this case, it was his beloved Ichiro.

Cute, Ben.

Gibbard claimed he recorded the track a few years ago — appropriately dubbed “Ichiro’s Theme” — and sought it appropriate to drop it on his SoundCloud Tuesday night. Here’s what he had to say:

I wrote this a few years ago. Today seems like the best day to let you all hear it. Thank you, Ichiro.

Catchy tune. I can almost see Gibbard holding a boom box on Ichiro’s front lawn in some weird yet totally believable “Say Anything” moment. But let’s get real, it’s time to take the gloves off, Ben Gibbard — and the rest of Seattle, for that matter. Your team has been the unequivocal laughing stock of the MLB for the better part of four decades and you just lost your best offensive player of all-time outside of Ken Griffey, Jr. to the Evil Empire overnight.

Put the coffee down and get angry. I bet Kurt Cobain wouldn’t have been as nice.
