Luke Scott’s Torn Labrum Leads To (Deserved) Torrent Of Twitter Snark
The Orioles’ Luke Scott is…well, he’s a crazy man. He proudly admitted to being a birther, and then when the most conclusive evidence humanly possible to debunk the birther movement was released, Scott…remained a birther. This, among other aspects of Scott’s…different personality earned him a fair amount of ridicule, and not undeservedly so.
But that’s a mere blip next to the abuse Scott is taking from all internet corners today. The reason: a torn labrum. He’ll continue to play through it, and because he’s Luke Scott, he said this:
“I was very disappointed to find out, but as I’ve said, I’ve had miracle healings before and I’m just trying for another one. I’m going to play through the pain, pray and believe in my miracle healing. That’s it.”
We will simply point out that the same guy who refuses to believe a birth certificate is real is talking about “believ[ing] in…miracle healing,” and move on to the internet’s reaction to Scott’s injury. Is a lot of it similar and predictable? Of course. Did we enjoy it all the same? Of course we did. WE’RE NOT MADE OF STONE HERE, PEOPLE.
There was Hardball Talk’s Craig Calcaterra, who requested that “God bless the low-hanging fruit that is Luke Scott news,” and speculated on a variety of treatment methods for the injury seemingly recommended by Theodoric of York, Medieval Barber. And then, there were the tweets. Oh, were there tweets.
There were tweets saying Scott injured himself patting himself on the back. There were requests for more definitive proof of Scott’s injury, lest they not believe it’s real. There were requests for more definitive proof of Scott’s injury. There were requests for more definitive proof of Scott’s injury. And, of course, there were requests for more definitive proof of Scott’s injury.
You also had people hearing the Scott news, and congratulating President Obama on his latest accomplishment. You had people wondering if SEAL Team 6 just took care of a new mission. Others simply thought Obama might turn the tables and demand proof himself. And others still just took the opportunity to call Scott a “racist piece of crap.”
All of which is to be expected. Even Scott surely sees that he’s said some extremely controversial (read: nutty) things, and he has to be used to taking crap from people for it. But frankly: he should be taking crap. He says ridiculous things – ridiculous enough that a bunch of jokes on Twitter are about the only appropriate response.
Maybe those jokes will get old after a while. But this guy used to bring a gun to the ballpark. He laments vague concepts like “the former attitude of America,” pining for an era it’s not entirely clear ever existed. And there’s the birther stuff. Yes, jokes about a guy like that might get old…but in our opinion, we’re not at that point just yet.
