Man Who Murdered Former Mariner Is Out Of Jail Thanks To “Insanity Via Marijuana” Defense

Former Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was murdered by his brother last November. Halman was “an icon” in his home country of the Netherlands.
Greg’s brother reportedly stabbed him to death “after a quarrel over loud music.” They were very close and played baseball together. The brother pleaded insanity, and it was found that he was having a “psychotic attack…partially brought on by marijuana use.”
His family supported the ruling, and the brother, Jason, has been released from prison. Jason’s lawyer had this to say (translated to English).
“It is for the prosecutor an extraordinarily difficult position. He finds himself in the dilemma that there is a serious crime was committed, but that perpetrators and victims are on the same side. The family of Gregory, the victim, wants nothing more than Jason to be released, in order not to lose two sons.”
The whole thing is as strange as it is tragic.
