Mariners Notch Amazing Comeback Win…And Almost No One Sees It
Yesterday was shaping up as a great day for the Seattle Mariners. Not only was reigning Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez pitching against the Blue Jays, but the M’s were wearing their teal alternate uniforms, which they wisely brought back this season after a multi-year absence.
Unfortunately, things went off script once the game actually started. First of all, hardly anyone showed up – the announced crowd was 13,056, barely a quarter of capacity. (Again, this was with Hernandez, the Mariners’ pride and joy, on the mound.) Second, King Felix went out and got shelled, lasting six innings but giving up seven runs and 12 hits. By the time he was done, the Mariners were trailing 7-0.
And then…somehow, the Mariners flipped the script again. The scored one run in the seventh. Still trailing 7-1, no big deal. Then, they scored five more in the eighth. 7-6 – bigger deal. And then, in the ninth, they got some more runners on base, and one of the scant few fans in attendance took it from there:
And that’s how you come back from a seven-run deficit. Non-Mariners fans have to feel a bit for the Blue Jays, too – you can’t jump out to a big lead against the best pitcher in baseball last season and not think you have it in the bag – but the Mariners, their fantastic uniforms, and the 15 fans who stuck around to see it earned every bit of that moment depicted above.
