Marlins Closer With Fake Name Has New Non-Fake Nickname

A few days ago we brought you the story of Florida Marlins closer Leo Nunez, err Juan Carlos Oviedo, using a fake name to play baseball. In admitting this illegality, Nuñez Oviedo will have to leave the country and head back to his home in the Dominican Republic. It’s since been revealed that Oviedo came out and told the truth after his dying father asked him to right before he passed away during spring training.
We had a few questions when the story came out. Like, how he could’ve still been pitching if the Marlins were aware of the situation for months? Or, will he be able to pitch in the big leagues again? Another, not-so equally important question was recently answered, though: What should we call him now?
See despite losing a teammate to identity fraud, fellow reliever Edward Mujica seems to be way more concerned about his bullpen mate’s nickname.
Reliever Edward Mujica said he spoke by phone late Friday night with Oviedo … who told him the story about his father … and playfully suggested that his old nickname — “Nuny” — no longer be used.
…
Mujica said he has a new nickname for his friend and teammate.
“J.C.,” Mujica said with a smile.
Well, at least it’s not that big of a deal.
