Here’s What That Insane Marlins Sculpture Looks Like Inside Their New Stadium

Remember that “mechanized sculpture” the Marlins were trotting out for their new stadium, the one that already looked something like the product of a bad acid trip when stationary, but when activated by a home run would become a full-on fever dream of moving parts, bright colors, and flashing lights? Well, for those of you holding out hope that it was all some sick joke, it is indeed a real thing, as this photo (from the Miami Herald) of the sculpture sitting in the new ballpark can attest:

Still garish, sure, but from a distance? Less bad than we expected, honestly. There are enough of the colors in the sculpture elsewhere in the stadium to make it look like it (somewhat) belongs there. But it’s still gimmicky. And we still haven’t seen what it looks like in real life when it actually lights up and starts moving. And if this is any indication at all, the sculpture still stands a good chance of turning the entire ballpark into a house of horrors yet.

Speaking of the stadium: as a whole, based on that picture, it’s looking pretty slick. ($370 million in public financing buys you a lot these days.) Especially nice are the glass panes in the outfield allowing for a view of the Miami skyline. Plus, unlike the stadium where the Marlins spent their entire existence through last year, this is… a baseball stadium. It’s just a baseball stadium with one psychedelic freakout flourish too many.

My first professional games I got to see in person (not counting Spring Training in Palm Beach County) were at Joe Robbie Stadium. It was a revelation when I’d later go to watch the Giants play in SF or better Camden Yards when I cheered for the Orioles. I’m really glad the Marlins now have a real baseball home.
