With This Bizarre Injury, The Astros Have Finally Had Their Most Astros-y Moment
It’s common knowledge that the Astros are a bad, bad baseball team this year, but until today, it had escaped me just how bad this team is – and especially, how bad it’s been lately. On the season, the Astros are 40-91. That is absolutely terrible. If they play at that pace for the season’s remaining 31 games, they’ll finish in the neighborhood of 49-113, which would place them firmly among the worst teams in modern baseball history.
But even that doesn’t capture how bad they’ve been lately. Since the All-Star break, as pointed out on Big League Stew, the Astros are 7-38. If they play at that pace for the balance of the season, they’ll win 45 or so games for the year, placing them dangerously close to “2003 Tigers” territory. When we poke fun at the Astros for especially Astros-y moments, that’s the level of badness we’re dealing with.
But last night might have produced the most Astros-y moment in a season full of them. Because last night, not only did the Astros produce a cartoonish blooper, but someone actually got hurt. The injury (which, granted, makes what you’ll see below a little tougher to laugh at): a sprained ankle to jack-of-all-trades infielder Marwin Gonzalez. The cause:
Again, Gonzalez is hurt, though he’s only listed as day-to-day. We hope he’s as good as new and back on the field as soon as humanly possible. But could any one play better sum up a lost season than this? Maybe sometime when you were young and did a dumb thing because you didn’t know any better, your parents attempted to find a silver lining by saying, “Well, at least no one got hurt.” The 2012 Astros? They can’t even manage that.
