Mets Suddenly On A Roll, No One Getting Fired

Remember those crazy days when the New York Mets organization was in disarray? The team was losing and manager Jerry Manuel was supposedly about to get fired, but others said the person who really deserved the ax was general manager Omar Minaya. You probably do remember all this, as it was less than a week ago.

But it’s amazing what one amazing (Amazin’?) series can do. The Mets just swept their division rival/two-time defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies in spectacular fashion, not only taking all three games but shutting the Phillies out all three times, led last night by suddenly ace-like Mike Pelfrey. Suddenly, the Mets are winners of five straight, they’re only two games out of first place, and fans are…well, still looks like fans are only cautiously optimistic.

It goes to show how quickly things can change. A week ago they looked like they needed to clean house. Now, ESPN New York’s Ian O’Connor says the team needs to worry about adding a top-flight pitcher like Houston’s Roy Oswalt or Seattle’s Cliff Lee – the better to make a playoff push.

While there’s no doubting a Mets starting rotation with a top three of Johan Santana, Pelfrey, and either Lee or Oswalt would be a nightmare to face in a playoff series, it also might be wise to wait until a little closer to the July 31 trade deadline to see just how serious a contender the Mets are. After all, another rough week and traffic to this site will probably pick right back up again.
