Minor League Manager Goes Nuts, Tries To Eject Umpire
Meet Stubby Clapp, veteran of 23 major league games in 2001 and currently manager of the short-season A Tri-City ValleyCats, affiliate of the Houston Astros.
Stubby had a case of the MONNNDAYS.
The Albany Times Union reports Clapp exploded yesterday after ValleyCats slugger Matt Duffy was hit by a pitch – only to have it waved off by home plate umpire Jeff Andrews, who claimed Duffy didn’t attempt to avoid the pitch. That led to this (video from FOX 23 Albany):
A manager attempting to eject an umpire isn’t particularly rare, as Jim Leyland did it in June and Joe Maddon actually ejected an entire crew back in April:
But Clapp’s overall performance earns a solid A for insanity.
In a twist of Shakespearean irony befitting Clapp’s acting performance, Duffy was hit again on the immediate next pitch and awarded first base.
