MLB Testing Tennis-Like Instant Replay System At Yankee Stadium And Citi Field

MLB is testing “two different advanced replay systems live during games starting next week.” Owners agreed to install radar-based and camera-based systems in Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. The systems will be tested in actual games, but will be merely analyzed behind-the-scenes and won’t affect play.
This is great, surprising news. Tennis’s widely-praised Hawk-Eye system uses both cameras and radar, so it seems likely that, eventually, MLB will figure this whole thing out, realize replay “works,” and fans will be “oooooh-ing” and “ahhhh-ing” just like they do in tennis. The league is also undergoing tests outside of live games in order to get sufficient data.
Yahoo! Sports says there could be an expansion of instant replay as early as next season if all goes as planned.
This is long overdue, but it’s promising. Welcome to the 21st century, MLB!
