New York Daily News: Alex Rodriguez, George Steinbrenner Had Tickets Erased By NYPD
The New York Daily News is reporting that the NYPD fixed tickets for celebrities and politicians including New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez and former owner George Steinbrenner.
Should you be ticked off at preferential treatment for the rich and famous? Yes. Should you be surprised that this goes on? No.
Rodriguez was driving on the West Side Highway in 2009 when he was pulled over and issued a ticket. Only later did a sergeant nix the ticket. New York Knicks guard Raymond Felton was cited for a moving violation near Madison Square Garden, but it never made it to court. Steinbrenner allegedly had squashed scores of tickets for family, friends, and staffers.
Representatives of these celebrities would literally just call up police headquarters to directly ask for tickets to go away. Cops would find a way of improperly voiding tickets, losing paperwork, or purposely miss court dates.
A police source told the paper:
It was very easy for a big name to walk away from a summons. [Celebrities] have contacts everywhere. There’s an eagerness to help because of who they are.
There’s an ongoing investigation to look into ticket-fixing, but nothing’s changing the culture: star fucking comes in variations and knows no bounds.
