The New York Post Got A Little Carried Away With Their Cover This Morning

Nobody would ever accuse the Post of being too accurate, or too unbiased, or not crazy. So it’s no surprise that, after the Yankees spoiled the 100-year anniversary of Fenway Park yesterday, the New York tabloid went a little overboard in describing the last century of Yankees-Red Sox baseball.

It’s true that, for many decades, the Yankees had the upper hand on the Red Sox. From the Murderer’s Row squad to the late 90s dynasty built around the Big Four, the Yankees took home plenty of World Series rings while the Red Sox, sadly, did not. Though it’s not like every time the Yankees went into Fenway, they walked out having swept the series and with the corpses of Boston’s hot dog vendors in their wake. And, as it is painful for a Yankees fan like myself to point out, since 2001 the Sawx actually have twice as many World Series championships as the Bombers (2-1).

With all that in mind, it might be a little surprising to walk to the newsstand today (or, as is slightly more common nowadays, to go on Twitter and look at twitpics) and see this next to The New York Times (via @darrenrovell):

And then you remember, oh yeah, this is the Post. It doesn’t have to be exactly accurate, as long as it’s catchy. And damn, is 100 YEARS OF ASS KICKING catchy.

In related news, there was a smidge of ass-kickery going on yesterday, as A-Rod went yard (passing Ken Griffey Jr. on the all-time home runs list, which is just incredible to consider) and led the Yankees to a 6-2 victory. Thus, Red Sox fans left their historic stadium yesterday dejected, having lost to their hated rivals on a day that should have brought joy. Is there any better way to sum up the last, say, 100 years for Sox fans? The Post, of course, says no.

Over the last five years, the The Red Sox have actually beat the Yankees more times. And three of those years, they were dead even at 9-9. Quite the “ass kicking,” right?

If the subject is historical…. They Yankees have a slight edge…. or we can go to recent history. Last I remember – the Yankees won the AL East in 2011, and Sox missed the playoffs.
Regarding the New York Post headline- They are absolutely correct. 100 years…not 9.
