It’s Come To This: New York Post Uses Gaddafi Killing For A-Rod Joke

(NOTE: This is your first warning: the newspaper cover below, in addition to containing a sports-related joke, is graphic in nature. If you do not like things of this type, we suggest not looking at it.) When the man who reportedly captured former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi yesterday, Mohammed al-Bibi, was seen in a Yankees hat, we wrote that we were surprised the story gave us any kind of sports angle to work with. And we figured that would be it. It was surreal to see a major political event in North Africa have even the slightest tie-in to America’s pastime, and we figured that when it came to writing about Gaddafi’s killing, that would be it for us.

Well, we were wrong. We were far from the only ones who took note of al-Bibi’s Yankees cap, and it seems the interested parties included the folks at the New York Post. And that led to…this. (NOTE: again, the cover photo you’ll see below depicts a man who was shot dead, so, you know, graphic. Avoid if you do not like graphic photos.) Okay, here goes, and yes, they spell Gaddafi’s name differently from us, but we’re not sure any two people spell it the same way, so oh well:

Yeah, they went there. Well – it’s the Post. Of course they went there. Still, though: yeah, A-Rod’s, A-Rod, with the mirror poses, occasional bush-league on-field stuff, steroid admissions, contract-opting-out during the World Series, huge contracts in general, etc. But working an A-Rod joke (at his expense of course) into the killing of a notorious former autocratic ruler? Post, we can’t believe anything still makes us say this, but we didn’t know you had it in you.
