WATCH: Music Video Critiques LeBron And Everything That’s Wrong With Sports
From the man who brought you Press Hop–the YouTube sensation that fused a selection of hilarious press conferences and enhanced them with Auto-Tune and a beat–now comes Press Hop 2, the newest melodious ode to the pantheon of absurd sports quotes.
And let us tell you, the sequel does justice to the original.
While DJ Steve Porter, the mastermind responsible for the project, took most of his selections for Press Hop from the press conferences of Allen Iverson, Jim Mora, Denny Green, Mike Gundy and Joe Namath–conferences that, in their own right, all produced endlessly quotable lines that have forever been immortalized in sports folklore (“I’m a man! I’m 40!”)–Porter appeared to get more creative for the sequel by offering his audience a much, much, much more inclusive montage of both quotes and visual imagery.
Another distinction that stands out in Press Hop 2 is that athletes depicted are, for the most part, of a much loftier platform than the subjects of Press Hop. He shows the press conferences of LeBron James‘ “Decision,” Tiger Woods ‘apology,’ and Brett Favre’s initial retirement speech, and if you pay attention, it becomes clear that Porter is taking shots at all of them.
Porter uses the juxtaposition of imagery in Press Hop 2 to highlight pertinent contradictions between the words of athletes and their actions. Unlike the original Press Hop, which, in retrospect, seems much more superficial and lighthearted, Press Hop 2 serves as a glaring critique of athlete behavior, especially of LeBron.
In fact, one of the lines in the song, which is created by a mix of quotes from LeBron, Tiger, and Charles Barkley, reads like this:
I’m going to take my talents to South Beach/to be a/turrible/Role Model/but still.
Truly germane commentary from Porter, and kudos to him for offering such an apt critique in such an enjoyable form.
Even if one couldn’t see the video itself, however, and thus the messages in the song, this is still a track one would enjoy bumping on an iPod.
Simply because, just like PH1, it sounds awesome.
