WATCH: Rays’ Matt Garza No-Hits Tigers
Yep, another one.
Matt Garza made Tampa Bay Rays history tonight, throwing the team’s first-ever no-hitter (but the MLB’s fifth of the year) in a 5-0 win over the Tigers.
Garza was almost perfect, allowing just one walk, to Brennan Boesch. (Garza quickly erased the lone baserunner by inducing a double play.) He graciously thanked his defense afterward (“can’t say enough about them”), but really, any no-hitter/perfect game is going to require some nice defensive work unless the pitcher strikes out all 27 batters.
One noteworthy subplot, besides the fact that this is another no-hitter (remember, factoring in Armando Galarraga, this should be the sixth of the season), is that the Rays finally came out on the right end of one of these things. As the linked game recap notes, they’ve been no-hit three times in the last two seasons – and two of those are perfect games. They’re one of baseball’s best teams, and it was time for them to do the no-hitting.
Watch video of the last out below. Who knows how many more of these we’ll have before the end of the season.
