Basically The Entire Red Sox Team Is On The DL
The bizarre string of injury misfortune for the Boston Red Sox continues – Clay Buchholz, an uncontroversial All-Star Game selection, is the latest victim. He has a strained hamstring, will miss a start, and will likely head to the DL from there, giving the Red Sox nine such players currently.
Nine players constitutes 36 percent of the active roster – this is more technically referred to as a “crapload.” And these are name players, too: Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, and Josh Beckett, for example, are all out of commission. Fans, understandably, can’t believe it.
With that in mind, the most impressive thing is that the Red Sox are weathering the injury storm as well as they are, staying within striking distance of the best-record-in-baseball Yankees and maintaining a 49-33 record. But the loss of Buchholz, even if it’s not for long, won’t make keeping up with the Yankees any easier – he is having a breakthrough season (third in the AL in ERA) and was a key cog in the Red Sox’ strong play.
Hopefully, this run of freak occurrences won’t have much effect on the AL East division race, and the Yankees, Red Sox, and the struggling-but-still-lurking Rays can settle it on the field. But for now, the real question is: who’s going to write the book on the curse that’s doubtless causing all these Red Sox injuries?
