VIDEO: Roy Oswalt Hit In Head With Manny Ramirez Line Drive
It’s been a rough spring for the Philadelphia Phillies. Chase Utley’s knee balked, Placido Polanco’s elbow hyper-extended, Brad Lidge’s elbow twinged, and Shane Victorino failed to look both ways before crossing the outfield.
At least Phillies fans could lean their hopes on the best starting rotation in baseball. Wednesday, though, the injury bug bit the staff, too, in the form of a liner off the bat Tampa’s Manny Ramirez that found the back of Roy Oswalt’s head.
The liner, which actually looked like it looped a little midflight, struck Oswalt just behind the right ear, according to reports. Oswalt momentarily hit the ground while all eight of his teammates on the field crowded around him, but popped up a moment later and walked off under his own power. He was taken to the hospital for x-rays as a precaution, and in good news for all involved, they came back negative. In addition, Oswalt didn’t lose consciousness and didn’t feel dizzy as he walked off the field, according to team reports.
The whole incident looked a little scary at first, but Oswalt’s exit looked reassuring for Phils fans with their hearts in their collective throats. Let’s just say it wasn’t as scary as this.
