Starlin Castro Spent Seven Hours In A Police Station Being Questioned About An Alleged Sexual Assault Last Night

An ugly story around the Cubs continues: Starlin Castro, the young shortstop who made his first All-Star team this past season, was questioned by police in Chicago last night about an sexual assault against him, stemming from an alleged incident in September. Reportedly, the questioning lasted seven hours, but Castro was released afterward and has not been charged. News of the accusation came out a week ago, at which time Castro’s lawyers said they were “confident that these allegations are baseless.” Castro says only that he’s “fully cooperated with the police.”

Certainly the Cubs must hope so (though they’re declining comment for now beyond saying they “take [the allegation] very seriously”): Castro’s considered one of baseball’s rising stars. He’s struggled in the field, making 56 errors in two seasons, but he hit .307 in 2011, stole 22 bases, and managed 55 extra-base hits, suggesting he might be a force at the plate for a long time to come. Now, though, it all takes a backseat to the still-ongoing investigation, where all we have is a disturbing allegation and a lot of uncertainty.
