Some Fans Angry Over Size Of George Steinbrenner Plaque

Only the New York Yankees would be at the center of a controversy about the size of a ballpark monument.

The team recently added its newest addition to their famed “Monument Park” in the form of a gargantuan plaque bearing the likeness of recently-deceased owner and sometimes Seinfeld star George Steinbrenner. But some fans are not too thrilled about it, citing the fact that it appears to dwarf all of the other monuments.

The plaque is measured at 7 feet wide and 5 feet high, but with its placement it towers over every other monument and plaque, including those of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

“So Steinbrenner is bigger than the Babe?” asked one commenter. “Bigger than Gehrig?”

“The size of one’s ego shouldn’t determine the size of one’s monument,” another commenter said.

Not everyone is up in arms about the size of the plaque, citing that it is perfect because of his larger than life persona.

“It represents George,” [Yankee President Randy] Levine said. “He was a force. He built the stadium. He took the Yankee brand to places nobody else did.”

There is no debating Steinbrenner’s influence on not only the Yankees, but professional sports as well. He was the first of the “look at me” group of owners that Mark Cuban currently heads. And in a franchise that is one of the most celebrated and is full of hall-of-famers, Steinbrenner managed to be one of its most polarizing figures.

The size of the plaque perfectly captures Steinbrenner’s place in the franchise. Plus it just isn’t the Yankees if it’s not gaudy and ostentatious.
