Yankees Announcer Suzyn Waldman Was Not Too Happy Derek Jeter Got Hit By That Pitch

Local sports announcers, being more closely affiliated with the teams they cover and the local audiences who root for them, can get away with being a little less objective calling games. Take Hawk Harrelson, for example. The hatred of the Pistons harbored by late Celtics broadcaster Johnny Most is legendary. And Yankees radio announcer Suzyn Waldman created something of a legend of her own when Roger Clemens announced he was coming back, and she got really, really excited.

Well, lest you think that was an isolated incident of Waldman being a little slanted, we now present to you Derek Jeter getting hit by a pitch against the Mariners yesterday. Granted, a lot of Yankees have been getting hit by pitches in this series, but this was your garden variety thigh-plunking. Nothing worth getting too upset over – Jeter himself made sure he got down to first base before he could receive any medical attention. But Suzyn has seen just about enough:

Note that Waldman’s broadcast partner John Sterling, not to be outdone, enjoyed Jeter’s evasion of trainers so much that he couldn’t help but say, “That was really cute.” No, John, your amusement. That was really cute. And really, in the end, Waldman didn’t have much to be upset about – Jeter’s HBP sparked a four-run eighth-inning rally that powered the Yankees to a 5-2 win. Any doubt that’s just the result she wanted to see?

As a Yankees fan, I find Waldman almost un-listenable (and almost might be generous). In this case, she’s not quite over-reacting, at least passion wise, but she is no where close to reality if she thinks they can just stop hitting guys… on accident (which this pretty clearly was).
