The Texas Rangers Attempt To Set The World Record For…Sunglasses At Night

Tonight in Arlington, Texas, tens of thousands of Rangers fans will gather at Arlington Stadium and mark the first day of summer by trying to set the world record for the most people gathered in one place… wearing sunglasses… in the dark. And if that attempt at a world record seems totally lame to you, that’s probably because it is totally lame.

But attempts at lame world records as gimmicks in the world of sports are nothing new. In May, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim fans set the record for the largest gathering of people wearing professional wrestling masks. In March 2010, Cleveland Cavaliers fans set the record for the largest gathering of people wearing sleeved-blankets (otherwise known as a Snuggie).

So are meaningless record attempts as gimmicks here to stay? Perhaps the fact that they’re getting more and more specific (sunglasses at night, really) might be a sign that teams are out of gimmicks, and that these promotions will soon be a thing of the past. And that would be a very, very good thing.
