The Red Sox-Dodgers Blockbuster Trade Is Now Official

As we discussed yesterday, the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers were on the verge of pulling off one of the biggest trades in recent memory. Due to the MLB’s not-so-deadline-y trade deadline, waiver wire deals are not off the table. And, as of this morning, the trade is now official.

The trade will send pitcher Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto and $12 million cash to the Dodgers for James Loney, second baseman Ivan De Jesus Jr., outfielder Jerry Sands and pitchers Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster.

Deep breath. The trade was in part delayed so Beckett and Crawford could waive their no-trade clauses. Somehow through all of this, Bobby Valentine is still the manager. Who knows if the Red Sox will actually carry out a youth movement or just use the payroll relief to splurge on free agents next offseason. And who knows if this trade will actually benefit the Dodgers, as they’ve essentially revamped their entire team over the past month. In any case, who knew the day would come when Boston would be the team pillaging someone else’s farm system.
