White House Scolds Big Papi For His Samsung Selfie With Prez

  • Rick Chandler

As you know, the Red Sox visited the White House on Tuesday, and David Ortiz managed to grab a selfie with President Obama … which turned out to be a greedy corporate money grab. Big Papi had signed an endorsement deal with Samsung the day before, who then used the photo for promotional purposes. Ortiz even yelled “Cha-ching!” right after he took the photo. What a very Yankees thing to do.

I thought we wanted to get the money out of politics?

Well, the White House has issued an official response today, because apparently President Obama knew nothing about what Ortiz was doing.

“As the rule the White House objects to attempts to use the president’s likeness for commercial purposes,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney – who is such a devoted Red Sox fan that he sported a team cap at the event this week. ”We object in this case,” Carney told reporters Thursday.

Carney dodged questions about whether the White House counsel’s office would put forward an official objection to the team or the company.

Probably not, because this map:

All the places in red represent counties in which the majority of MLB fans list the Red Sox as their favorite team, according to Facebook stats.

And actually, don’t Presidents invite folks to the White House all the time for campaign finance purposes? Someone just did it the other way around this time.
