THE TOP 15

  • 1. Jimmie Johnson: With three finishes of 39th-or-worse since July, Johnson has officially been in a funk. He appeared to get out of said funk at Watkins Glen International, running at an ARP of 8.7, but was caught in a late wreck that left him finishing 28th. The good news is that Michigan International Speedway is on the horizon. Johnson logged his first career win at the site in the June event, leading 39 laps with an impressive 5.1 ARP. Since the inception of Loop Data in 2005, Johnson leads all drivers in Fastest Laps Run (389). With Fantasy owners potentially doubting Johnson because of his latest skid, there is actually value to be mined here across all formats.

  • 2. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Junior hasn’t finished outside the Top 15 in any of his last 10 Cup races, posting an Average Finish of 7.0 in that span. Simply put, he can be trusted at any track right now. What’s great about this week is that regardless of recent success, Earnhardt Jr. has always been a top play at MIS. This week that’s doubly true. He’s worth the price of admission in Salary Cap leagues.

    97.5 12.6 30 2 6 11 2 16.0 348

  • 3. Brad Keselowski: Keselowski posted a third-place finish in the June race at Michigan, leading three laps in the process. Fantasy owners can ignore the 35th place finish from a week ago, as he also got caught up in a wreck (there were two red flag stoppages). Keselowski has proven to be one of the best value plays in all of Fantasy and nothing has changed in regard to that. He’s a great start in Tiered/Grouping formats and Salary Cap leagues.

  • 4. Kevin Harvick: Harvick is historically spotty at most tracks, but MIS is one of his more consistent venues. He finished second with 63 laps led and a 4.2 ARP in the June race. Fantasy can expect a similar result. He’s a nice Tiered/Grouping format option.

  • 5. Jeff Gordon: Gordon finished sixth in the June event at Michigan. On the year, he’s finished outside the Top 15 three times. Three. Times. In 22 races. Some drivers may have more upside, but Gordon is the safest start in Fantasy Racing.

  • 6. Carl Edwards: Edwards has three Top 10s in his last four starts at Michigan. Coming off a fifth-place finished at WGI doesn’t hurt his case for a spot in Tiered/Grouping formats.

    102.2 10.9 20 2 9 15 1 9.1* 291

  • 7. Matt Kenseth: Focus has shifted for Kenseth. The pressure for a win to make the Chase is off, but he will be behind the eight ball without those bonus points from wins. Look for him to go all out for Checkers.

  • 8. Joey Logano: He’s finished sixth-or-better in each of his last six Cup races. He finished ninth in the June race at MIS. Get him in all provisional Tiered/Grouping format lineups for this week.

  • 9. Denny Hamlin: Since finishing first, second,  and first in three straight at MIS (June 2010-11), he hasn’t posted a Top 10. Call this one a gut feeling. Serious value in Salary Cap leagues.

    10. Greg Biffle: It’s only two short years ago that The Biff won back-to-back races at Michigan. Biffle leads all drivers in Laps in the Top 15 (3,085) and Quality Passes (864).

    TOP 10 BEST VALUE PLAYS

  • 1. Kasey Kahne: Kahne remains two spots out of the Chase and desperately needs a win to punch his ticket to the playoffs. He finished fifth in this event in June. Serious value here in Tiered/Grouping formats.
