Via Fox News, The numbers so far during the NASCAR portion of Daytona Speedweeks are staggering.

Admittedly, I can’t say that I watched last night’s Budweiser Shootout. But, what I can say is that while I do respect the sport of NASCAR, I am in complete awe when something like this happens and the driver(s) involved is still able to walk off unscathed.

From Fox News: “The 19-year-old son of NASCAR on Fox studio host Chris Myers has been killed in a car accident. The network says Myers will not be part of Fox’s coverage of the season-opening Daytona 500. Christopher Myers was killed Thursday in Southern California, where the family resides.”

You’re NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne. You’re walking through the grocery store, minding your own business, when all of a sudden you see a woman breastfeeding her baby right there next to the carrots and broccolis and whatnot. You take a second look, because you’re obviously seeing things. But you’re not!

Yesterday, First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, were the Grand Marshall’s at NASCAR’s Sprint Cup finale. Their reception was not a kind one.

Attention quickly turned away from the race itself to drivers’ well-being at an IndyCar event today in Las Vegas when a huge crash took out 15 cars and, reportedly, seriously injured driver Dan Wheldon.

We’ve been writing about conflict here this afternoon. While it was newsworthy and riveting in its own way, that can get taxing. It can make you just want to see an example of people getting along, cooperating to get things done…and the video after the jump delivers the goods.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be driving with a new Diet Mountain Dew-themed car next season on the NASCAR Sprint Cup, and he unveiled it live on SportsCenter Wednesday during an interview with ESPN‘s John Buccigross.

The car itself is rather meh, but we especially appreciated Buccigross getting in a reference to recently-broken-up rock band R.E.M. at the end of the interview.

On Friday, Tony Stewart had a nice little pow-wow with the media (it was called a “garage-area media availability” session, to be exact). At some point, he got mad at Associated Press reporter Jenna Fryer for asking a question about a Sprint Cup race that took place at Richmond International Raceway, which I guess would be okay if not for the fact the interview was taking place at… Richmond International Raceway.

Most of us have experienced road rage at some point or another, so it makes sense to us that drivers in NASCAR are occasionally prone to extreme cases of that feeling. Today, thanks to irate driver Boris Said, we got a prime example of that rage in action.
