UPDATE: Driver Dan Wheldon Dies After Massive IndyCar Crash

UPDATE: Tragic news: it was just officially announced than Dan Wheldon died after sustaining serious injuries in the crash seen above. An awful day for the racing community, and of course, those close to Dan Wheldon. Terrible. RIP.

Attention quickly turned away from the race itself to drivers’ well-being at an IndyCar event today in Las Vegas when a huge crash took out 15 cars and, reportedly, seriously injured driver Dan Wheldon. In a chilling coincidence, ABC showed a view from inside Wheldon’s car just before the crash occurred. It was clear this was not a run-of-the-mill crash as more and more cars flamed out, and announcers sounded more and more disturbed. Of course, we hope Wheldon, and everyone else involved in this, turns out okay.

I was stunned by the slow response by some of the crews to release one of the drivers from his seat, and how little assistance was given to him while he was exiting his vehicle. His car was on fire. My prayers are for all of the drivers and for Dan Wheldon and his family. This was a strange race. What happened?
