Blake Griffin’s Dunk Over A Kia, Now In Slow-Motion
So maybe Blake Griffin‘s slam-dunk-contest-winning jam (you know, the one where he dunked over a car) wasn’t the best dunk of the night. But it was still quite theatrical, especially when you watch him soar over that Kia in slow motion.
Perhaps all those whispers about how Griffin is no longer the coolest guy in the NBA are a little unfounded. Maybe it was so hard for him to outdo his nightly viral greatness, that he thought it was necessary to put on the spectacle that was his final dunk in Saturday’s contest.
And before anyone starts getting too cynical about the dunk and the rookie’s drop on the cool scale, let’s remember: fans elected the winner of the dunk contest. So there’s still plenty of people out there who are (rightfully) sending the love in Griffin’s direction.
Here’s a look at the dunk in slow motion:
Of course, the question of how everybody’s favorite (pre-All-Star game) rookie came up with his idea is now circling the internet, which will most likely perpetuate the ongoing rumors of his uncoolness.
Some guy named Michael Scrivner says he came up with the idea for the dunk, and was upset that Griffin didn’t give him so much as a shout out. In response to the Clippers star’s request for dunk ideas, Scrivner tweeted:
“Seen you want dunk ideas on ESPN Park a car on the court Jump over the car while the driver throws you oop through the sunroof.”
Griffin had a different take on how he came up with the idea:
“It was actually my idea to use the car,” he said, according to NBA.com. “When they first came to me with the dunk contest idea, they said there were no rules. I was like, ’So I can jump over a car?’ Kind of playing around.
In fairness to Scrivner, his idea does sound a pretty much identical to the finished product. But the dunk champion has more than 200,000 Twitter followers. He probably didn’t read all of their suggestions.
The question is, if Griffin really did come up with idea himself, exactly how soon did he decide to turn the dunk contest into a KIA commercial? And once the advertisement is made, will Scrivner start looking for more than just a shout out?
We’ll see what kind of backlash Griffin receives once the car advertisement is released. For now, we’d like to voice some disappointment with the TNT crew (and Charles Barkley in particular, who said “that’s a great looking car” at least three times during the performance ) for their shameless, shameless touting of the “official car of the NBA.”
