Coach K Has Stepped Down As The Head Coach Of USA Basketball

Over the summer, various rumblings had Mike Krzyzewski stepping down from his position as head coach of USA basketball. Moments ago on ESPN Radio’s “Mike & Mike In The Morning,” Coach K confirmed that fate: beginning this summer, Jerry Colangelo and the rest of USA basketball will hunt for a new coach for the World Championships in Madrid in 2014. After seven years leading Team USA, Coach K brought home two gold medals – one in Beijing (2008) and the other in London (2012) – as well as the FIBA World Championship title in 2010.
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is the odds on favorite for Colangelo’s first choice replacement, with Doc Rivers and Doug Collins earning their own set of whispers as well. But ultimately it really doesn’t matter; there are a slew of coaches to choose from, and it would be difficult for any coach to mishandle a squadron of All-Stars headlined by LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul.
