Dan Gilbert Going Off Deep End With LeBron Hate
Hey, remember that angry open letter about LeBron in Comic Sans font by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert that the team’s homepage still redirects to? Well, Gilbert’s not finished airing his thoughts. And at this point, it’s getting to be a little much.
He opened up to the Associated Press last night, and he has not calmed down yet. He said that LeBron quit on the Cavs in games 2, 4, 5 and 6 of their series against the Boston Celtics this year – in other words, every game the Cavs lost. He also accused him of giving up in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Magic last year.
But hey, why stop there? The Cavs lost 21 games during the regular season, too! Just say he gave up in all of ‘em! And he had more:
“It’s not about him leaving,” Gilbert said. “It’s the disrespect. It’s time for people to hold these athletes accountable for their actions. Is this the way you raise your children? I’ve been holding this all in for a long time.”
Oh, you’ve been holding a lot of things in and are letting loose now? Gee, we would never have guessed! And though we’re still not fans of how LeBron handled his free agency and announcement, at this point we have to agree with Dwyane Wade when he says:
“I think I’m happy that I have the owner that I have here in Miami,” Wade told The Associated Press late Thursday night. “I’m happy Micky Arison is my owner. I couldn’t believe it. I’m speechless. It’s very unfortunate and I think it makes LeBron that much better about his decision.”
Gilbert’s initial letter, while taking deserved flak for the absurdity of the font, was also an honest emotional response (well, maybe not so honest, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo!) to how upset he was, as well as probably about the most effective thing he could have done to galvanize his team’s fanbase (Priority No. 1 after such a crushing event).
But just not stopping in his unrelenting criticism is going to start making LeBron look like the victim. And after last night’s fiasco, no one wants that. An open letter to Dan Gilbert:
Dan:
The letter was enough. Please cool it now.
