Why Deron Williams Chose The Nets Over The Mavericks

By now you know that superstar point guard Deron Williams is expected to re-sign with the Brooklyn Nets. You might also know that future Hall-of-Famer Jason Kidd acted as a sort of advisor to Williams during the making of this decision, playing golf with him last week in New York, sending him playful big brother tweets, and generally just being his bud. You know, just his golf-playing, tweetin’ bro bud. Helps to have those.
According to Kidd, the decision Williams made was a tough one (which we kind of knew already, since Williams himself said it was a tough decision), and the highly-coveted point guard ultimately chose the Nets over playing close to home (he grew up in Texas) because of the roster upgrades Nets GM Billy King made this week.
King traded for 6-time All-Star shooting guard Joe Johnson, didn’t give up promising youngster MarShon Brooks, re-signed lockdown defender Gerald Wallace, and added Bosnian forward Mirza Teletovic (who sounds promising, but, again, Bosnian forward; check out his YouTube clip though, and make your own call). There was also talk of getting Dwight Howard, although that may be a bit of a reach at this point.
Meanwhile, Dallas lost Jason Terry to the Celtics, and besides that, their roster remained unchanged.
“Honestly, it came down to the roster,” Kidd said. “Brooklyn made moves that improved the roster dramatically, and he saw things were going that way. That would be my opinion from looking on the outside. He felt that if Dirk goes down he’s sitting with himself.”
And while we’re sure Williams took a good, long look at the rosters of his suitors — the guy has been losing an awful lot the last few seasons, and we’re sure he’s tired of it — there’s also the money: under the new CBA, Brooklyn was allowed to offer him $98 million over five years, while the Mavs were only allowed to offer four years and $75 million.
So many years. So many numbers. So much to contemplate. Luckily, he had his golf-playing, big tweetin’ bro bud to help him navigate his decision.
