Even The Hypothetical Knicks Big Three Can’t Match Miami’s Real One

How big did the Knicks miss out in free agency this year? The next possibility fans will likely try and talk themselves into – a Big Three of newly-acquired Amar’e Stoudemire, Hornets point guard Chris Paul and Nuggets star/newlywed Carmelo Anthony – is likely the absolute ideal scenario for the franchise now…but it still wouldn’t equal what the Miami Heat already have.

Yes, this big Knicks news today is that Paul supposedly broached the possibility of a more perfect Knicks union at Anthony’s wedding this weekend. And while the Nuggets are intent on keeping Anthony around, hey, it’s fun to speculate!

Of course, besides the fact that there’s a good chance this will never come to pass, there’s the fact that this Big Three would be compared to the Heat’s Big Three – and that one has two of the top three players in basketball. You’re not topping that. Even in the ideal scenario, the Knicks are still taking a backseat to another franchise – a long way from their LeBron dreams.

However, the flip side: this would still be a very exciting trio, and would absolutely make Knicks basketball relevant again. And who knows – they might even mesh better than the Heat’s new power trio. Nothing’s proven until they step on the court, and having two players as good as Wade and LeBron at one time could be a blessing and a curse.

On the other hand – Paul as a setup guy, Anthony as the #1 option, Stoudemire as the inside force: offensively, at least, that group could play awfully well together. And with the product the Knicks have been putting out the past several years, they could use something to generate some excitement. This trio would bring it, and it sounds like at least one potential piece wants it.

OK, we’ll stop there. No use getting Knicks fans’ hopes up too high. They’ve had more than enough disappointment as is.
