Jeff Van Gundy Thinks Miami Heat Will Break Single-Season Win Record (Video)
ESPN announcer and former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy told the Miami Herald on Saturday that the Heat “will break the single-season win record. And I think they have a legit shot at the Lakers’ 33-game [winning] streak, as well.”
The 1996-96 Chicago Bulls hold the single-season win record, with 72, and the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers hold the record for longest winning streak.
Last night, PTI discussed Van Gundy’s remarks. Dan Le Batard doesn’t think you can assume this is the best team ever, “before you’ve seen anything.”
Michael Wilbon, however, was surprised – not by the prediction, but by who made it.
“Jeff Van Gundy is not a master of hype. He doesn’t go around overstating stuff all the time. For him to say it, sort of stunned me, Dan. But it makes it a greater conversation because of the messenger.”
Neither Wilbon nor Le Batard think the Heat will win 72 games, however, with Wilbon citing the Eastern Conference’s top teams (the Celtics, Magic, and Bucks) as why it’ll be a tough road for the Heat.
