Laugh Now, Cry Later? Stan Van Gundy Chuckling About Weepy Miami Heat

It turns out the New York Knicks aren’t the only ones laughing about the Miami Heat‘s “crygate.” Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy seems to think it’s pretty funny, as well.

In the day and a half since Miami coach Erik Spoelstra admitted that his players got a little weepy in the locker room, it seems everyone has an opinion. Van Gundy (who’s known to have an emotional outburst or two himself) said seeing locker room tears is nothing new to him, but he couldn’t help but find the whole thing a little funny.

In response to Dwyane Wade‘s comment that “the world is better now that the Heat is losing,” Van Gundy said:

“I do chuckle a little bit when they sort of complain about the scrutiny when they get. My suggestion would be if you don’t want the scrutiny, you don’t hold a championship celebration before you’ve even practiced together. It’s hard to go out yourself and invite that kind of crowd and celebration and attention, and then when things aren’t going well, sort of bemoan the fact that you’re getting that attention. To me, that doesn’t follow.”

Of course, by “championship celebration,” the Magic coach likely meant Miami’s extravagant “welcome party” to introduce the new-look Heat—you know, the one where Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh strutted down a stage, WWE-style?

Van Gundy, like many others, believes the Heat players thought they were going to win a championship simply by showing up.

“Despite everything they’ve said to the contrary, I do think – I’m not saying Erik and the coaches or their front office – but I think the players thought it was going to be easy and they were going to roll over everybody,” Van Gundy said. “It hasn’t materialized that way up to this point.”

Miami is still only four games out of first place in the East, so it’s not exactly like their season is over. But expectations were high, really high. And as Tony Kornheiser said, the crying could be a sign that something is terribly wrong in Miami.
