Even Replicas Of Michael Jordan Must Only Endorse Nike

A few days ago the Michael Jordan statue outside Chicago’s United Center was adorned with a Chicago Blackhawks jersey, hockey helmet, and skates. It was a cute way to pay tribute to the Blackhawks, who are now two wins away from their first Stanley Cup in 49 years. It seemed original, too – we looked it up, and this appears to be the first time the statue has been altered in this way (let us know if we missed any other instances of statue dress-up). Either way, a fun idea.

Just one thing was wrong – by virtue of the NHL’s sponsorship deal with Reebok, the statue of Jordan, who’s endorsed some Nike products in the past if you haven’t heard, the Jordan statue was now in (gasp!) non-Nike gear. Luckily, some enterprising individual fixed that, placing a Nike sticker over the Reebok logo on the skates.

Was it an undercover Nike operative? Nike, per the first story linked here, offered no comment on the matter, and the second linked story said the sticker was the result of “fan-dalism.” But it would make for a more interesting story were Nike responsible for the sticker…or imagine if they made Jordan himself slap the sticker on under the cover of darkness! And maybe Jordan sustained a Reebok-shaped burn on his upper lip recently, and was forced to grow his now-infamous Hitler mustache to cover it up? We can dream.
